i have an idea for a good art project…it would be best in video but photo would also work…black/white or perhaps sepia would be best. anyone can have this idea. i am not selling the idea, just giving it to a good home wherein an artist might live. the idea is to catch people in the act of leaning over the edge of streets, at the edge of curbs, looking for the bus to arrive. every act of leaning seems to be different when i see folks awaiting the bus. each lean tells it’s own story. the new owner of this idea can name the project whatever they wish, though i think “eileen” would be interesting…so would “chet” or “payshents”.

i read parts of books in the rocking chair in my youngest daughter’s room as she falls asleep in her crib. the lighting isn’t the best (one of those handy book lights you can get a book store). and when my daughter cries as she fights sleep (she’s the kind of person that wants to be awake and alert and involved when there are people around) it can be harder to concentrate on the book. still, i read. the book i am reading now is about a woman who rose from an impoverished life in dublin to become a rather prominent writer. the book is a memoir. i just got it back from one of my employees that i had loaned the book to for a spell. the book mentions about how improbable it was for a woman to become a columnist in the largest irish newspaper. she shared that the dublin in which she grew up would not have been able to handle a woman such as she was to become. she wrote how dublin changed. she writes about how she changed. her’s is a memoir about finding where you fit.

we can spend quite some time searching for the places in which we will fit. be it a journey or a struggle, we sift through the encounters life provides trying to find those places in which we will fit. some writers talk about it as if life is a puzzle and there is a perfect fit for each piece…each person. we will be at peace when we find the right fit. or so they say. so says all the philosophers from the dawn of wise times.

i felt some chest pain today. i doubt it was a physical condition. oh, i might be a tad overweight (i would prefer to lose 15 lbs) but i am rather fit for my age…it’s likely due to restless energy which in my youth would have likely been diagnosed as attention deficit w/hyperactivity disorder (some day i will write more about making the cake saver on top of the refrigerator in my childhood homes rattle because of my constant twitching feet). the chest pain was not a physical anomaly. i think the chest pain was a condition of the situation i was in.

i am not sure how well i am fitting into the david i have become. adjustments are likely needed. perhaps it is true that it is best to change before i get changed.

my youngest daughter turned 17 months today. while out for a bite to eat, she carefully picked out her favorite parts of the breakfast bagel. and then she made the sign (she knows some american sign language) for water. and, carefully swallowing what she had been chewing, she took a few sips of water from the cup. was she thirsty? was her throat dry? did she want the sensation of a liquid? i do not know what she was thinking, though she was thinking and expressing in a way in which providing her with water satisfied her request. did she know she was asking for water? does she know what “thirsty” means? is she thinking in words like her mom and i do? does she have any sense that i think about this?

in some ways i understand the ‘to do’ about tobacco cessation. in some ways i do not understand the ‘to do’ about tobacco cessation. the bans on smoking are a riotous emotional debate. i traveled recently…for business…in las vegas. the smoke was intense and made for some difficult breathing. the dust in the desert air was intense and made for some difficult breathing. the smoke affected the taste of some of the food i ate. the constant ‘ding ding ding ding’ of the slot machines affected the experience of dining.

some of my best memories of my father are rooted in his smoking. from the two times he burned me in the head while leaning over me as i sat, to the time i stole one of cigarettes so brant and bryan and i could try smoking, to how his fall coat smelled when he would get home from a church meeting at night, and, best of all, how his car smelled in the middle of winter, before he lit up a new cigarette…the cold air and the left-over smoke from the day before…that is etched in my mind. those are happy memories about my dad, though getting burned twice was a bit odd.

while out walking the dog this morning i caught my neighbor on the phone just inside her front door. i waved. she used to be a bit of a challenge when she was a teenager and living in the neighborhood. now she is an adult with a kid and friendly and caring. as i walked by her house i noticed her hand out the door…holding a cigarette. that struck me as a bit curious…the steps we will take to engage in a behavior that may otherwise be unwelcomed. i suspect her landlord has made the place smoke-free. she is abiding by the rules and finding a way to still engage in behaviors she finds meaningful.

oh, i know some folk only think of smoking as an addiction. i tend to perceive beyond an organism level and believe people engage in behaviors, even habitual or ‘addictive’ behaviors, because there is meaning in the behavior. when the meaning fades the behaviors can fade. i am well aware that there are other consequences to our behaviors that affect the meaning, but that concept of meaningfulness prevails.

and such is the issue of the current debate about smoking. there are those who find meaning in both not smoking and the damage created by those who do smoke. there are those who find meaning in smoking and the damage created by the attitudes and behaviors of those who seek to ban smoking. there is not much dialogue at a meaningfulness level other than the emotions surrounding the argument.

i find meaningfulness in portions of my life that are still rooted in my father’s smoking. i am certain he is not in heaven or hell based upon his smoking behavior, though some would argue such that i would believe it is that important (and this is similar to those folk who insist that anyone driving a suv is also engaging in behavior tantamount to human and earthly homicide). i’ve been more interested in the whole person…the fuller meaning.

honestly, i really don’t care if the city of milwaukee places a ban on smoking. oh, i may have my preferences, but those preferences will also guide my decisions. i don’t typically spend a great deal of time in smoking areas. i would if there was a purpose for such behavior. if an establishment opts to be non-smoking that won’t be main reason i patronize the service…i’ll be looking for a bit more than that. if an establishment opts to be a smoking environment, my patronage will be based upon the overall purpose of the services in which i may partake with my time and energy.

oh, i need to add, i have some excellent memories of one of my brothers and his lament to my dad about how the cigarette he was smoking was ruining an excellent breakfast meal prepared by my mom.

and, i have other memories of my father and my brother that have absolutely nothing to do with smoking

that’s what i believe. and, as my brothers and i used to say when we were particularly confident in an argument: “put that in your smoke and pipe it”

ever notice that we can say one of the most excellent things to a person, such as “i love you”, and say those words often, and it can come to seem as though the words have little to no effect. the words become like wallpaper…nice, adding to the ambiance, but not the most noticed of things, just there. but if you say one not so loving thing, even if in honesty, it is immediately noticed and carries the weight of pain or sorrow or in it’s worse extremes anger or hate. those other words become a burden, staining the ambiance, creating a set-back in a relationship. i tend to think we are prone to being on the lookout for the unkind words, even when that means we put a negative connotation on what was intended to be a helpful word, and repeatedly overlook the kind words. we say we want to hear the compliments…that we don’t get enough compliments…that the loving words settle deep, but then act as if anything said otherwise is as a laser, piercing the heart. sometimes i lament i am not a 17-month old kid who takes anything from the parent who loves them and accept it as it is…joying only in the interaction without all the complexities of expectations and hurt feelings and lingering pain or even resentments. that i even think about this makes me wonder of the roots to my own thoughts and intentions

sometimes we will go for weeks before we buy new birdseed for the feeders in the back yard. we intend to get the seed sooner but life activity and other sundry excuses preclude the purchase of flight fuel. even when the feeders are empty i look out and wonder if i will see a cardinal or purple finch. peregrine falcons will eat mourning doves in the garage eave regardless if we have seed in the feeder. i have never placed a mourning dove in the feeder to feed the peregrine falcons. once we had two mice climb the feeder poles and get stuck in one of the feeders. the mice did not draw the attention of any peregrine falcons. the mice ate all the seed. i released those mice. i suspect the neighbor’s cat ate the fatted mice. yesterday my youngest daughter and i bought more flight fuel from the pet store. my youngest daughter liked looking at the pets in the store…she especially liked the birds. i am thinking about getting a pair of zebra finches. the only problem with birds in the house is all the seed. i would likely put up screen outside the cage to prevent too much mess. as of nearly 24 hours the birds have not yet returned to the feeders. they are angry that we took so long to fill the feeders. i went outside and voiced my apology to the neighborhood. i tweeted and twittered and sang bird songs. i even sang ‘peent’ because i believe this is the most accurate spelling of an actual bird song…peent is the song of the american woodcock and i once heard a woodcock singing and it sounded exactly like ‘peent’. oddly, the woodcock i heard was in canada but it was still an american woodcock. i even came across a song called ‘the peent song’…you can find it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG4ZkP9YhEY . i also sang ‘deedin’ which is also a rather accurate spelling of a bird song though i don’t know the name of the bird. deedin was how a little boy…his name was mike weber…used to say my name. regardless, i await the return of the birds. then i will know they trust me again
